Many believe it was inspired by Egyptian artwork and adopted from the mythology. More than any other creature in the ancient 5,000 year old Egyptian hyroglyphics are the bird/man beasts; with the body of a man and the head of a bird.

Heu… could the The “Immortals” (from the Greek Ἀθάνατοι, sometimes “Ten Thousand Immortals” or “Persian Immortals”) of Darius III that fought against Alexander the great forces in The Battle of Issus linked???
And Many centuries later during the Napoleonic Wars/Wars of the Coalitions, French soldiers referred to Napoleon’s Imperial Guard as “the Immortals.”

“We saw it…. the hussars let loose their horses. God, what power! They ran through the smoke and the sound was like that of a thousand blacksmiths beating with a thousand hammers. We saw it…. Jezus Maria! The elite’s lances bent forward like stalks of rye, driven by a great storm, bent on glory! The fire of the guns before them glitters! They rush on to the Swedes! They crash into the Swedish riters…. Overwhelm them! They crash into the second regiment – Overwhelmed! Resistance collapses, dissolves, they move forward as easily as if they were parading on a grand boulevard. They sliced without effort through the whole army already! Next target: the regiment of horse guards, where stands the Swede King Carol. And the guard already wavers!

“angel” is a Greek-based word.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel
The Hebrew word for “angel” is found among the oldest writings in the Bible, including the book of Joshua, which has been dated to at least the 8th century B.C.E. (possibly earlier in light of recent discoveries).
Naturally, we would not expect the Hebrew word “angel” to appear in Babylonian or Sumerian languages.
However, “cherubim” – a specific type of angel mentioned repeatedly in the Bible – has a very close counterpart among other Mesopotamian cultures:

“Mor Isaac (See Kircher’s OEdipus, vol. ii., p. 425) shows the ancient Syrians defining their world of the “Rulers” and “active gods” in the same way as the Chaldeans. The lowest world was the Sublunary — our own — watched by the “Angels” of the first or lower order; the one that came next in rank, was Mercury, ruled by the “Archangels”; then came Venus, whose gods were the Principalities; the fourth was that of the Sun, the domain and region of the highest and mightiest gods of our system, the solar gods of all nations; the fifth was Mars, ruled by the “Virtues”; the sixth — that of Bel or Jupiter — was governed by the Dominions; the seventh — the world of Saturn — by the Thrones. These are the worlds of form. Above come the four higher ones, making seven again, since the three highest are “unmentionable and unpronounceable.” The eighth, composed of 1,122 stars, is the domain of the Cherubs; the ninth, belonging to the walking and numberless stars on account of their distance, has the seraphs; as to the tenth — Kircher, quoting Mor Isaac, says that it is composed “of invisible stars that could be taken, they said, for clouds — so massed are they in the zone that we call Via Straminis, the

Milky Way”; and he hastens to explain that “these are the stars of Lucifer, engulfed with him in his terrible shipwreck.” That which comes after and beyond the tenth world (our Quaternary, or the Arupa world), the Syrians could not tell. “All they knew was that it is there that begins the vast and incomprehensible ocean of the infinite, the abode of the true divinity without boundary or end.”
Wouldn’t the question be; ‘When did God reveal the presence of Angels to man?’ What Is doesn’t become a concept until man tries to understand what Is by way of the ego/mind. Then he remains one step removed from the direct experience of the Truth of It.
