Angel – Season Five

Description
The Angel Investigations team is stunned when the Senior Partners of Wolfram and Hart give them control of the L.A. office. The gang quickly moves in, and although everyone is delighted at the amazing resources they now have at their command, they can’t stop wondering what the catch is. But the biggest mystery of all revolves around a small package Angel receives containing an amulet and a handful of dust—which coalesces into a very-much-alive Spike.Amazon.com
Lives were upended--and some co-opted--in the fifth and final season of Angel, as the denizens of Angel Investigations found themselves taking on one of their scariest endeavors ever: corporate life. After making a literal deal with the devil (or something distinctly devil-like), Angel (David Boreanaz) moved his team from their crumbling hotel to the high-rise digs of law-firm-from-hell Wolfram & Hart, his reasoning being they could better fight the forces of evil from the inside, and with more resources to boot. Clever maneuvering or easy rationalization? Not a few members of Angel's team accused him of selling out (as did a number of viewers), but as with most of the show's previous four seasons, Angel somehow took a dubious premise and mined it for gold. And with one core cast member gone (Charisma Carpenter, whose Cordelia was immersed in a deep coma), it seemed as if the show, from within and without, would suddenly fall apart--that is, until Angel's longtime nemesis Spike (James Marsters) showed up, fresh from his sacrificial roasting at the series finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Let the vampire games begin!

With Buffy off the air, fans flocked to Angel's last season to get their fix of Joss Whedon's "Buffyverse" in any form they could, and the addition of Spike was a shrewd one, albeit not enough to keep the show from getting canceled. And for the first half of the season, the creative forces behind the show seemed to be toying ruthlessly with the audience. Spike was around, but not entirely corporeal; Angel himself became sullen and withdrawn; and most horrifically, sweetheart scientist Fred (Amy Acker) and former watcher Wesley (Alexis Denisof) underwent traumas that would test even the most devoted viewer. However, just when you'd be about to throw in the towel, things started changing for the better--Spike became a permanent fixture (both in the flesh and on the show), Angel's secret motives were revealed, and the introduction of demon warrior Illyria, who proved to be the show's answer to Buffy's sardonic demon-made-human Anya, was a welcome breath of fresh air. Creatively, Angel also came up with some of its best episodes, including "Smile Time" (where Angel is turned into a puppet – really!) and "You're Welcome" (the show's 100th episode, which marked the bittersweet return of Carpenter's Cordelia). The ending of the series was deliberately ambiguous, and not everyone made it through alive, but in going out kicking, it was a proper sendoff for a show that always fought the good fight. --Mark Englehart

What happened, Joss? Did you lose your fricken mind? I can’t believe how awful this season was. I had to actually FORCE myself to watch. The only reason I’m giving this season a star at all is for two episodes: “You’re Welcome” and “Origin”

I used to be OBSESSED with Angel and now, after seeing season 5, I can’t even watch an episode of it or Buffy. I even sold all of my dvds to blockbuster. I honestly can’t stomach any episodes knowing that they ruined some of the best characters television has ever created.

Save your money people and buy something worth your time 24 or Nip/Tuck. I honestly can’t believe what a disapointment this season was.

I bought seasons 1-4 because they rocked, I mean I loved them a LOT. But season 5… Why not simply change the name to ‘Spike’ season 1? Or how about ‘Angel & Spike’. This season was made for the Buffy fans, and not true Angel fans, period.

    Sorely disappointed.

Angel, season five, gave the show a hit! and then it’s bad ending gave season five a bad series Finale, But Angel was still great! it also had a mark of joy in my all time Fav, life of the Party, i also liked Conviction, Your welcome, and Time bomb, illyria looked nice in time bomb. it also came by as the funny charectar of Spike and his power to control his laughter, in real life. his most funny words were “shanshu boogaboo” and my all time fav, What he said to the girl, really what kind of a retard wears heels in dark alley? who does? Cathrine Mc-ywur?

it is also a shame that WB canceled the show right in it’s time Period of high ratings. it’s a shame of WB not caring at all about the Angel fans. it’s really a Shame, and i have to say that:Now look what you did! you too need Angel to save your channel, then why did you cancel it in the first place?

it’s so obvious that star world, is hell without Angel & Buffy, Xfiles, Roswell, Dark Angel, Friends, Ally Mcbeal, everything is gone, and theres nothing to watch! Now i can’t help, cauz i am unofficial, i don’t know anything about WB nor Angel’s Set, and Official Time, so i can just vote.

and by the way, i think someone has already Made a good story for Angel Season six.

    not me but someone else.

Both shows ended pretty lame. What was so winning about ANGEL was the group dynamic and how they all played off of one another. At W&H that all vanished. The addition of Spike was incredibly stupid and his attempt to cover for Cordelia’s snarky attitude failed…just like it did on Buffy. The introduction of Eve (a poor man’s Lilah Morgan) and Knox are quite possibly the most best examples of the most hated characters in the Buffyverse. Lorne, who used to be funny, is stripped of any comical antics. Fred dies, but it really is wiped of any emotionality seeing as how Cordy was killed off liek 2 weeks earlier. Gunn gets a new gig as a lawyer (with hair) but it is not believable. Wes still pines after Fred…tired old plot device. Returns from Darla & Dru (flashbacks only) and Connor & Sahjan. Really poor episodes like the submarine one (BORING), the intro of the stupid werewolf girl (lame ending complete with atypical WB music in the background), a fantastic idea for a puppet show which was excuted incredibly poorly.

I give this season 2 stars for 2 reason. First hiring Harmony as the secretary. A definite plus since she was both familiar and adept at comedy, her stand-out episode was a treat and one of the best of the season. The second star goes to “You’re Welcome,” for being the BEST of the season and feeling like the old ANGEL we all loved.
