How did Colossians 1:16 end up getting interpreted as referring to angels?

"For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him"

Even in context this clearly seems to refer to political authorities and has not one iota of a link to angels. What on Earth led to the angelic interpretation of this?

    It is clearly all encompassing.

That is also a misinterpretation of Christ as creator.T;s not what was said but they of who tried to translate what was written, for it is clear that God created the heavens and the earth.I just wanted to get that out of the way.In answer to your question, the only ones created in heaven are Angel’s,that is why you get angels from that scripture.

Well, the verse refers to things visible and invisible. You forgot that. Please cross reference this verse.
Ephesians 3: 10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

This verse refers to principalites and powers in heavenly places. Yes, there are principalities (Princes) on earth and in heavenly places. There are political authorities there for heaven is hierarchical.
It is not beyond the pale to see this as angelic entities.
